Does your baby always look the same direction? Learn what may be causing this side preference and simple ways to encourage your baby to move and look both ways.

Does your baby always turn their head to one side when they're sleeping? Or favor one side during feedings, no matter how you try to switch it up? I see this all the time in the office, and it's one of the first things I check in with on a newborn's first visit.

This side preference is usually a sign of mechanical neck strain. It can come from the position your baby was in during those final weeks in the womb, or from a long or difficult labor. Either way, one side of the neck ends up tighter than the other, and turning that way just feels easier.

Here's the part that matters most. Babies learn about the world through movement. When a baby can only comfortably look one direction, that's the input their brain is getting, over and over, every single day. The brain adapts to what it's given. So a tight spot in the neck isn't just a physical thing, it starts to shape how your baby experiences their whole environment.

The good news is this responds well to gentle care. When we help release that tension in the neck/shoulders, your baby gets access to their full range of motion again. That means more information reaching the brain from both sides, not just one. Better movement, better brain.

A simple thing you can try at home is alternating the direction you offer the bottle or breast, and switching up which end of the crib faces the door or window so your baby has a reason to turn both ways. Small changes, done consistently, add up.

If you're noticing a strong side preference, or your baby seems to fight you when you try to turn their head the other way, that's a good time to come in and let us take a look. No pressure, just a conversation about what we're seeing and how we can help.

If you notice your little one always turns the same way, that's a good time to come get a checkup and we can figure it out together. Book a Baby first visit.
