When Your Body Doesn’t Feel Like Yours

No one really prepares you for this part. The transition from carrying a child to holding one is the most intense physical shift a human body can undergo.

The hours curled over your baby—feeding, rocking, and protecting—place a unique strain on your system. It’s not just "tired muscles"; it’s a body trying to find its center again while it’s constantly in motion. Somewhere between loving your baby and learning this new rhythm, you realize you don’t quite feel like yourself anymore.

The low back ache that won’t quite fade:

This often lingers because your center of gravity shifted for 10 months, and your pelvis is still working to reconstruct its stability. No matter how many stretches you try, if the underlying alignment is still "guarding" against that old pregnancy posture, the muscles can't fully let go.

Ribs that tighten when you try to take a full breath:

During pregnancy, your ribcage naturally flares outward to create space for your growing baby. If those ribs remain stuck in that "flared" position postpartum, it keeps the abdominal wall under constant, outward tension. This is one of the primary reasons diastasis recti (the separation of the abdominal muscles) can be so slow to heal—it’s difficult for the midline to close when the ribcage above it is still pulling everything open. This creates a mechanical restriction that makes every deep breath feel like you’re fighting against your own corset of tension.

Pelvic tension that lingers well past the "six-week" recovery period:

We’re often told that six weeks is the magic finish line, but the ligaments and nerves of the pelvis don't follow a calendar. If there is lingering torque from birth or pregnancy, it can manifest as a persistent "heaviness" or discomfort that keeps you from feeling truly back in your own skin.

Postpartum recovery isn’t about waiting it out. It’s about helping your body integrate what it just experienced in a gentle, intelligent way so you can truly heal instead of just cope.

POSTPARTUM CARE

Postpartum Care That Respects Where You Are

I offer gentle postpartum recovery designed to help you reconnect with your body after birth, without adding more stress to your schedule.
I keep our sessions efficient, usually 15 to 20 minutes, because I know your time and energy are at a premium right now. Please know that your baby is always welcome here. My office is a place where a mid-session feeding or a fussy newborn is never an "interruption"; it’s just part of the season you’re in.

During our time together, I assess what is truly driving your discomfort. Whether it’s the rib flare that can contribute to diastasis recti, pelvic imbalance, sacral tension, or the "nursing posture" strain in your mid-back, I look for where your nervous system is overloaded. Then, I apply precise, gentle adjustments and supportive modalities that create space and relief.

That shift matters. When you restore ease to your own movement, you aren't just finding comfort for yourself, you’re ensuring you have the physical and emotional capacity to show up fully for your baby.

Imagine Feeling Like This

I want you to take a second to picture what your day would look like if your body wasn't constantly "guarding" itself. Imagine:

  • Standing up without bracing or anticipating that familiar ache in your low back.

  • Feeding your baby without your shoulders burning, because your posture is supported by a mobile, relaxed spine.

  • Taking a deep breath that actually feels full, as your ribs finally find the space to expand.

  • Moving through your day without feeling pulled, compressed, or fragile.

When we address the underlying tension in your nervous system, your core muscles can naturally start reawakening. It’s not about "fixing" you; it’s about removing the interference so your body can do what it already knows how to do.

Mothers often tell me that after an adjustment, they finally feel "lighter," or that it feels like their body "fits again." Most of the time, they simply tell me: “I did not realize how much tension I was holding.”

The Path to Lasting Ease

Because your body has spent months adapting to the shifts of pregnancy and the physical demands of early parenthood, tension often becomes "locked in" as a new, uncomfortable normal. Recovering that sense of ease is a process of retraining your nervous system.

Ideally, I recommend a rhythm of one visit per week for your initial restorative phase. These sessions are efficient, usually 15 minutes, making them easy to fit into a busy day with a newborn. We use this weekly cadence to build momentum; each visit builds on the last to move you from temporary relief to a state of permanent ease. Think of it as a gentle reset that helps your body "unlearn" the bracing of the past year so you can move forward with confidence.

What Every Visit Includes

I believe that for care to be effective, it must be both specific and transparent. When you are in my office, I am focused on the "why" behind your discomfort as much as the "what."

Step 01

A Detailed Movement Assessment:

We start by identifying the true source of your tension. Often, the place where you feel the ache is simply the spot that’s working the hardest to compensate for a restriction somewhere else.

Step 02

Gentle, Principled Adjustments:

These are specifically tailored for the postpartum body. There is no force—only precise, light movements designed to restore mobility and release the "bracing" your system has adopted.

Step 03

Nervous System Support:

We work to move your body out of a "high alert" state. This ensures that healing happens on a neurological level, allowing your muscles and ligaments to truly relax and hold their new alignment.

Step 04

Practical Guidance for Real Life:

You’ll leave with clear, simple strategies you can use at home. Whether it’s a better way to position yourself during feeding or a simple movement to reset your ribs, I want you to have the tools to continue your progress between visits.

Frequently asked questions

Dr. Tebbe has been an essential part of postpartum care for both me and my baby. After a difficult labor and early challenges with breastfeeding, I needed a lot of support to even feel capable of taking care of myself and baby. Treatments for my baby eased her areas of tension and quickly improved latching issues, helping me continue breastfeeding with confidence. Dr. Tebbe has been there through all the ups and downs of these postpartum months and gave me hope each visit that things would get easier. And indeed they have! The postpartum journey can be very long but I am grateful for Dr. Tebbe’s thorough, patient, and non-judgmental approach to support me through it.
