Navigating 3rd Trimester Hip and Pelvic Pain

When you reach the home stretch of your 3rd trimester, and simply getting out of bed, rolling over, or going for a short neighborhood walk brings sharp hip pain or an ache in your pelvis, everyday life can feel quite exhausting. 3rd trimester hip and pelvic pain can make even simple daily activities feel uncomfortable. After trying pillows between your knees, resting as much as possible, and modifying your routine, you still feel stiff and achy. It is quite common for the late 3rd trimester to feel physically draining and frustrating. Be gentle with yourself, because these symptoms are common and it does not mean you are doing something wrong.
It is very easy to assume that deep pelvic tightness is just something you have to grin and bear until delivery. While your baby is growing quickly and your body is releasing hormones to soften your ligaments, pain is usually rooted in how your joints are moving under that extra load.
As your baby shifts forward, your center of gravity changes. This places extra mechanical demand on your sacroiliac joints and pelvic girdle. If one side of your pelvis loses its natural motion or gets stuck, the surrounding muscles have to work overtime to protect the area. That extra muscle tightness is often what creates that deep, burning ache in your hips when you stand or walk.
A mom recently came into my West LA practice at 35 weeks because pelvic pain had made her evening walks too uncomfortable to enjoy. During her evaluation, I checked her pelvic alignment and found a clear restriction in her right SI joint.
Care in my office is always gentle. Using light, precise contact points, I helped release the restriction in her pelvis so the joint could move smoothly again. Once structural movement was restored, her nervous system was able to let go of that constant muscle guarding. Within a few days, she was back to enjoying her daily walks with ease.
My core belief is simple: Better Movement. Better Brain. When your body moves freely, your nervous system works better, allowing you to carry your baby with far more comfort.
